History/Chronology of PNCIMA

 

1997 Oceans Act comes into force.
2002 Oceans Strategy released.
2002 Interim Measures Agreement between the Minister of Fisheries & Oceans, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and Coastal First Nations regarding economic measures, Marine Use Planning and Co-management signed.
2004 MOU Respecting the Implementation of Canada's Oceans Strategy on the Pacific Coast of Canada between Government of Canada and Government of British Columbia signed.
2004 PNCIMA confirmed as the lead (pilot) Large Ocean Management Area for the Pacific Region.
2005 Oceans Action Plan released.
2005 A PNCIMA process framework agreed upon between DFO - Ottawa and Coastal First Nations.
2006 Coastal First Nations and other First Nations within PNCIMA coordinate under an area based technical and governance framework. Technical work begins towards the development of marine use plans.
2006 Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas in the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area: Phase I - Identification of Important Areas published.
2007 Ecosystem Overview: Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area and Marine Use Analysis of the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area published.
2008 MOU on Collaborative Oceans Governance between Fisheries & Oceans Canada, Coastal First Nations and North Coast Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society signed.
2009 First PNCIMA Forum held.
