Glossary

  • Integrated management: A commitment to planning and managing human activities in a comprehensive manner while considering all factors necessary for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources and the shared use of ocean spaces.1
  • Marine Protected Area: A clearly defined geographic space, recognized, dedicated and managed through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.2
  • Precautionary approach: Erring on the side of caution.3
  • Sustainable development: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.4
  • Stakeholders: Individuals or groups of people with particular interests in an issue or area.5
